POKOTABI / Monk
モンク
A jazz-filled kissaten perched on the 2nd floor near Shimo-Igusa Station, Monk offers everything from homemade demiglace beef stew and borscht to rotating cake sets alongside its signature blend.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Just a short stroll from Shimo-Igusa Station on the Seibu Shinjuku Line, a flight of stairs leads up to the 2nd floor and the entrance of Monk. Named after the legendary jazz pianist Thelonious Monk, this kissaten sets a chic, understated mood with counter stools, comfortable table seating, and a gentle soundtrack of jazz. It is a welcoming retreat whether you want a quiet solo break in the afternoon or a calm space for reading and relaxed conversation.
A natural place to begin is the house Monk Blend, which balances sweetness with a deep, pleasing bitterness, or a crisp, clear iced coffee. For afternoon tea, pairing your drink with a cake set is a highlight. The daily lineup in the showcase might feature cinnamon-scented apple pie, a cream-laden Mont Blanc, refreshingly tart rare cheesecake, or seasonal citrus tarts, making the choice an enjoyable ritual in itself.
Monk goes well beyond standard coffee-shop snacks, serving thoroughly satisfying Western-style meals (yoshoku). A standout is the beef stew, filled with tender chunks of beef simmered slowly alongside potatoes and carrots in a deep, savoury demiglace sauce. Other hearty choices include a vibrant borscht packed with beets and cabbage, rich curry rice, and comforting soup sets with vichyssoise or clam chowder, catering easily to whatever you crave that day.
Food sets can be rounded out with salad and a drink, letting you linger comfortably through the end of your meal. Keep in mind that payment is cash only, so it is best to have bills and coins ready before you visit.
